Are third-party VPN services or the TOR network supported?

Subscription-based VPN (Virtual Private Network) services (NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN, PureVPN, AirVPN, etc.) are a useful tool for securing and anonymizing your internet activity and intentionally spoofing your geo-location to bypass geo-locked online services.  The TOR network offers similar benefits.

However, these services are not supported while on the Susquehanna University network, as they will interfere with your ability to access campus resources.

Additionally, you should not use these third-party VPN services or the TOR network from any location when attempting to log into SU systems.  The nature of VPN services and TOR will rapidly change your IP address and geolocation, a common flag for a compromised account, therefore our Microsoft cloud security systems will likely lock your account and/or trigger an MFA (multi-factor authentication) prompt on your account.

If you would like the benefits of a VPN service while also being able to access Susquehanna University systems, please use the Susquehanna University VPN.  This is available to all students and employees.  Details for how to install VPN can be found here.
