Where can I recycle my old electronics?

The Office of Information Technology serves as a drop-off point for electronic recycling (e-waste).

Institutionally-owned assets:

For electronics (computers, network equipment, A/V gear, etc.), these must go through the university’s device off-boarding workflow.  Please submit a work order to helpdesk@susqu.edu indicating what equipment needs to be recycled and the location.  IT staff will coordinate the pickup of this equipment and ensure any equipment which stores data is securely erased, and that all institutionally-owned assets are properly removed from our inventory.  Please contact Facilities Management (FacilitiesWork@susqu.edu) for items which are more “appliance” in nature (refrigerators, scientific equipment, etc.).

Personally-owned assets:

Some guidelines:  We’ll accept just about any consumer electronics – computers, servers, laptops, netbooks, tablets, monitors, printers, peripherals (scanners, keyboards, mice, cables, hard drives), routers, phones (wired, cordless, cell, smartphones), televisions, DVD players, VCRs, stereos, radio, cameras, GPS units, calculators, audio equipment, electronic batteries, etc.

The following are not accepted:

  • Large, non-electronic batteries (car, etc.)
  • Any appliances (heating, cooling, cooking, cleaning, etc. appliances)
  • Electronic media (VHS, CDs, cassettes, floppy disks, etc.)
  • Printer toner/ink cartridges
  • CRT (tube) computer monitors
  • CRT (tube) TVs
  • Flatscreen TVs larger than 55”

BONUS:  A major concern most users have about disposing of an old computer is the security of any data left on the device.  Passwords, account numbers, financial information, medical information, and perhaps some other sensitive data may still be on your old hard drive.  As an added service, IT will securely wipe your hard drive, which we can often accomplish even if your computer isn’t booting up.  (IT performs this as a courtesy and can assume no liability for your information, and is also dependent on age/operability of the device.  Please coordinate with the IT Help Desk if you’d like to request this.)

Where can I drop these items off?:

IT Help Desk – Seibert Hall (Lower Level), during normal business hours

Student Residents – End of Year Moveout:

Aside from the year-round e-recycling options detailed above, students residing in residence halls will have access to special move-out drop-off points for e-waste.  During move-out week, Facilities Management will place skids with signage outside each resident hall area.  Residents may place ANY unwanted electronics from their room, including appliances, on these skids.  Please utilize these skids, rather than placing electronics in trash cans or move-out dumpsters.

What happens to my recycled electronics?

Susquehanna University partners with UPCYCLE, who will recycle your electronics in a sustainable way.  A portion of any proceeds as well as reusable equipment is donated to various educational programs by UPCYCLE.
