How do I install Office 365 Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) on a Mac?

Body

Current Students, Faculty, Staff, and Retired Fac/Staff are able to install Office 365 Apps on up to 5 devices while they have an active SU account. They are also able to access the applications via the web for free.

Installing Office 365 Applications

To install the desktop applications, please follow the instructions below.

  1. Navigate to www.portal.office.com in any web browser
  2. Sign in using your SU email address and password
  3. Click on Install Office near the top right-hand corner
  4. Click Office 365 apps in the drop down to immediately begin the download
  5. Once the download has completed, open Finder, go to Downloads, and double-click Microsoft Office installer.pkg file (the name might vary slightly).

Tip: If you see an error that says the Microsoft Office installer.pkg can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer, wait 10 seconds and move the downloaded file to your desktop. Hold Control + click the file to launch the installer.
  6. On the first installation screen, select Continue to begin the installation process.
  7. Review the software license agreement, and then click Continue.

  8. Select Agree to agree to the terms of the software license agreement.

  9. Choose how you want to install Office and click Continue.

  10. Review the disk space requirements or change your install location, and then click Install.
Note: If you want to only install specific Office apps and not the entire suite, click the Customize button and uncheck the programs you don't want.

  11. Enter your Mac login password, if prompted, and then click Install Software. (This is the password that you use to log in to your Mac.)

  12. The software begins to install. Click Close when the installation is finished.

  13. Launch an Office app to start the activation process by clicking the Launchpad icon in the dock to display all of your apps

  14. Click the Microsoft Word icon in the Launchpad.

  15. The What's New window opens automatically when you launch Word. Click Get Started to start activating. If you are prompted to sign in, be sure to use your full SU email address and password.

  16. Office should now be installed and ready to use.
